8 Modern Classics to Cure your Gaming Boredom

Let’s face it, every so often playing games just doesn’t sound appealing. As much as we love sitting on the couch and zoning out for a few hours, sometimes there just isn’t anything to play. These 8 games have helped me reignite my passion for gaming in the past, and they may help you too.

1. Doom 3

Whenever I have an itch that needs scratching, Doom 3 always delivers. Something about the level design, the way the guns feel, and the vibe of the whole hellish adventure just makes me feel good. If you’ve been longing to play a shooter that doesn’t rely on gimmicks and can’t seem to find anything that’s satisfactory, grab Doom 3.

2. Eternal Sonata

JRPGs are a polarizing genre. If you grew up playing Final Fantasy and Tales of Symphonia, then you’ll likely love Eternal Sonata. If not, it may take a while to get used to the cheesy dialogue and unique battle system; however, I think that Eternal Sonata transcends preconceived notions about JRPGs. The unique battle system, interesting story, and incredible attention to detail always make me feel nostalgic for some reason. This is a go-to game for when you want to delve into a great world and story.

3. Dust: An Elysian Tail

The anime style may alienate some gamers, but at its core this is a classic-style Metroid/Castlevania game. If all you want is another Metroid game, then you’ll be at home with Dust. If you do play through this game, I recommend leveling up attack and HP first, because then you’ll wreck everything and have a great time. Just saying. Carry on.

4. Alan Wake

Oh Alan Wake, where have you gone? At this point I’d consider sacrificing a goat (or goat simulator, heyoh!) to get another true Alan Wake game. Stephen King, Twin Peaks, and forests; if you like any or all of those things, I highly recommend you either play Alan Wake again or pick it up for the first time. Either way I guarantee you’ll have a good time re-exploring this fantastically built game that hits the spot when no other games do.
